Ever since my childhood I have loved being physically active. I climbed trees, rode a bike, played games, and DANCED. It gave me joy, self confidence, and a sense of wellbeing.
During my years as a primary school teacher I taught Modern Educational Dance, choreographed school performances, and taught Keep Fit to the staff. At the start of 2000 I found myself in a situation where I needed to review my life and realised school teaching was not giving me the joy and job satisfaction I wanted. I decided to take my life back and re-train to do what I had always wanted to do: MOVE.
By the end of that year I was teaching fitness classes and I loved it! Over the years I have taught fitness to many different groups of people: from school mums to active (and not so active) grannies (and grandads), to people in wheel chairs and with other mobility issues, to people with learning difficulties, and to ladies after breast cancer.
I watch the timid or the reluctant bloom into joyful and confident participants. I watch the enthusiastic become more aware of how they can best use their bodies. I experience each group develop into a family that supports each other. And, of course, I see everyone getting fitter: becoming stronger, more supple, and better coordinated (even those with two left feet!)
My health and fitness qualifications combined with previous dance and teaching experiences are sprinkled with "life", to produce friendly, caring and effective programmes, where everyone can participate at their own level, and enjoy!
I specialise in Fitness Pilates in which I am continually amazed at the wonderful changes experienced from the seemingly simple exercises. At first participants are taught basic exercises to introduce them to the principles needed to build a strong and effective Pilates practice. They learn how to take responsibility for themselves and their progression through the Pilates levels. Step by step bodies become stronger and more flexible, better posture is achieved, balance is improved, and a sense of quiet and peace is experienced.
I also specialise in the over 50's age group , where many of us often require treating our bodies with a little more respect and TLC. These are groups who appreciate that we need time to think and practice in order to get the most out of our fitness routines. Some people come who wish to start to exercise, or who wish to return to exercise, or who are recovering from illness or injury, and have finished their physiotherapy sessions. It really is never too late to exercise and to reap the benefits.
